This is a cute little trick that was used in e1m3 (I think), with the big Q
shadow in the teleporter room to the left and up of the path split. It's
described in detail on the QuakeLab, I believe. It involves an illusionary sky
texture, a brush or brushes above it (that cannot be seen by the player), a light
above the brushes to create a shadow, and finally a real brush to seal the whole
thing off (which may not be needed).

Go to the QuakeLab if you want to get an explanation that actually makes sense :)
