Either you haven't VISed yet, or your map is too complex in that area
and the Quake engine is hiding the spikes.  Or have you applied a
trigger->hurt to them?  In that case, they'll be invisible, 'cause all
triggers are invisible.

If the latter is the case, what you want to do is make your spikes, with
no triggers on them, then place a big rectangular block around them
(enclosing them compltely) to which you apply the trigger->hurt.
