If you want speed/ease of use, BSP is not the best choice. It is a very
good editor, and is one of the most powerful out there, but user
friendliness is not its strong point.

If you don't mind shelling out some cash, Qoole and Worldcraft are
probably the easiest editors to use. I've never used Qoole, so I can't
speak for it, but I got started editing Quake1 maps with Worldcraft
v1.1, and I've found it to be extremely intuitive and easy to use.
Worldcraft does have a shareware version, but it does not support Quake2
editing. You can, however, download a 7 meg patch to allow the
shareware version 1.5b to edit Quake2 maps, or you can pay for the full
version 1.6 which does allow Quake2 editing.

For freeware editors, the two most popular are QERadiant and BSP. I'm
currently using QERadiant. The interface is not quite as intuitive as
Worldcraft, but all the features are there, and I've found it to be
quite good, once I got used to it, and tweaked it to my personal
preferences (first thing I did was get rid of that useless Z view, and
switched to the traditional four view interface (top, front, side and
3D). Another plus is that it's completely free, and it's actually based
on id's QE4 source code. It also runs pretty well on lower end
machines. Granted, the documentation ain't that great, but if you visit
the Ravages of Radiant site (www.planetquake.com/ravage), there's lots
of great tutorials to get you up and running.
