  Hi everyone

First post in this group. I'm running some quake servers at a portuguese
ISP and I've been doing some heavy playing :-) and generally getting
 informed about all Quake aspects.

There are two things about quake and current quake servers that bother me:
one of them is campers; the other is the lack of strategy, cunning and
  overall finesse that deathmatch has.

I think that a new version of Quake could be created (which I call Finesse
Quake) that solves these two problems (campers and all-around-running-
and-firing-rockets). This would basically involve editing the maps (whatever
they are; possibly the dmX original maps) and eliminating the rocket, the
laser, the quad and the pentagram. Camping occurs basically because of
the existence of the rocket: people just get close to a rockets spawn point,
respawn point or high place and wait, confident that a single blast from a
rocket will kill any poor soul :-); the rocket launcher is also responsible
for the current way of playing deathmatch: you try to get the rocket and then
run around like crazy to avoid getting hit while firing at anything that
 moves.

The removal of said items (rocket l., laser, quad and penta) would, in my
opinion, bring some fun back to deathmatch, making the players use strategy,
think about the game, listen to the sounds, use more pauses (but not camping)
without getting blown to smithereens. In a word: finesse.

Now: has anyone done this already, is doing it or is thinking of doing it ?
I wouldnt want to repeat someone else's work, and to waste time meanwhile.
Please let me know either in this group or through email.

If there's no such thing, could you give me a few pointers on how to do it ?
From what I've read already it seems that I would only need a map editor (to
remove the referred items); from what it seems I would also need a converter
from bsp to map format (to get at the dmX original levels); and of course the
compiler utilities (qbsp, vis and ???).
Anything else I would need ? Any recommendations or suggestions ? Even
simple opinions about Finesse Quake will be welcome :-)

Please let me know and thanks in advance.

  C U!
