Nothing dumb about it at all.  With Q2 as it comes out of the box,
there's just a single model.  BUT when you use the vwep patch and link
up to a server that supports it (as most of them do now, I believe) you
can see what gun other players are holding.  Vwep is available all over
the place, including at ftp://ftp.telefragged.com/pub/vwep/

You should really try to get a better internet provider, since
multiplayer is the only way to go!  But if for some reason you can't,
you should still be able to do some damage.  A friend of mine uses AOL
and manages to kick some serious butt in multiplayer.
