Starcraft has rushing. Rushing ruins the game. I would prefer to play an
island map to avoid that OR play people I know that like to build and
conquer.

Total Annihilation has tank rushes. They occur mostly on metal maps. I
prefer to play a map like Painted Desert or a water map like metal
isles...etc.

Rushes do ruin these games because I feel like I just wasted my time. It is
not a strategy to build one unit and send it into another base in the first
ten minutes of playing. That would make the advanced units worthless.
Since there are advanced units, that means that the games are intended to
use those units.

There are ways that game designers can avoid this. I don't know waht the
best would be, but a cannon on top of each building designed to destroy
first level units is an answer.
