I think the problem is with Microsoft's dial-up networking autodial thing;
code in the game might invoke some network services that the cause the
autodial to kick in for some reason.  It happens to me too, not only with
Quake2 but with WinQuake.

So don't be calling the id Software team idiots when you don't know what
you're talking about, because it's most likely not their fault that this
happens.  You shouldn't get this pissed off over such a trivial thing
anyway.
